How to measure a window for a roller blind: Step by step, without the stress

Ordering a made-to-measure roller blind today can be done in just a few minutes. Nevertheless, there is one step that many people worry about the most – measuring the window correctly. You may be asking yourself: „What if I make a mistake of a few millimetres? What if the roller blind doesn’t fit?“ The good news is that measuring is not rocket science. In fact, it only takes a few minutes and you can do it yourself with an ordinary tape measure. The only important thing is to know exactly what to measure and which installation method to choose.

The first step is not measuring. It is deciding where to install the roller blind.

This may surprise you, but you can leave the tape measure on the table for now. First, decide where you will install the roller blind. The entire measuring process depends on this decision. You have two options:

 

Installation inside the window recess: The roller blind is installed directly inside the window recess. You therefore measure the dimensions of the opening itself. The roller blind looks very clean and minimalist. It is suitable where you want to preserve as much space around the window as possible or highlight the windowsill. 

Installation in front of the window opening: The roller blind is installed on the wall or ceiling above the window and covers the entire opening, including the frame. Here, you do not measure just the opening, but also allow for the fabric overlap. This helps limit light entering from the sides and makes the roller blind appear more prominently as part of the interior. It is the ideal solution if you want the best possible shading or blackout.

  • a tape measure,
  • a spirit level or laser level – to check that the window is truly straight,
  • a pencil or notepad,
  • a few minutes of your time.

  • the window handle,
  • the windowsill,
  • the radiator below the window,
  • tilt-and-turn windows or other elements nearby.

If you are installing the roller blind in front of the window

In this case, you measure the space you want the roller blind to cover.

Measure both the width and height, and at the same time consider how much overlap you want on the sides. The overlaps help provide better shading and reduce light entering around the roller blind.

If you are installing the roller blind inside the window recess

The process is slightly different here.

You measure the dimensions of the window opening directly and need to allow for a small installation clearance so that the roller blind works correctly and does not rub anywhere.

It is also worth checking that the window reveals are straight and that, for example, the handle will not obstruct the open window.

1. You measure only once

3. You leave too little overlap

For installation in front of the window, it is not enough to measure only the width of the window opening. For the roller blind to provide good shading and look attractive, it needs a certain overlap on the sides. This is a common reason for incorrectly selected dimensions.

4. You measure in only one place 

Windows are not always perfectly straight. Therefore, measure the width and height in several places, and when installing inside the window opening, use the smallest measured value. This will ensure that the roller blind fits correctly.

This is a common situation. Measure in several places (top, middle and bottom) and use the smallest measured value. If the differences are greater than a few millimetres, we recommend sending us a photo – we will advise you on a solution.
